Several local teams were on hand to compete including Springfield Fight Club, Team Fusion Jiu-Jitsu & MMA, Barry County Fight Club and newcomers Team Pride and Fight or Die. The event featured a variety of fighters, many new to Mixed Martial Arts. Most of the fights ended in the first round which is very common with new fighters. As fighters develop there skills they tend to slow things down and progress into longer more difficult fights.
The event featured two UCW Title Fights. Dewey 'Dukes' Cloud of Team Fusion faced Barry County Fight Club's Shane Beck. Both fighters entered the cage undefeated with matching fight records of three wins with zero losses. At the onset of the event both fighters knew only one of them could emerge still undefeated. Shane Beck won the fight in the first round via submission. Beck applied a Jiu-Jitsu technique known as the Rear Naked Choke. Shane Beck earned the title of UCW Featherweight Champion. Beck also received an award for "Submission of the Night".
The main event of the evening was originally scheduled to be a title fight for the UCW Middleweight Championship. The match was moved to the Light Heavyweight division when the challenger was unable to make the required weight for a Middleweight bout. Team Fusion's Devian Golden faced Barry County Fight Club co-founder Andy Hunter for the title of UCW Light Heavyweight Champion.
Devian Golden finished the fight fourty-four seconds in to the first round. The referee stopped the fight due to strikes from the mount position. Andy Hunter stated that he was fine and would have liked the referee to let the fight go longer. Hunter said he would like a re-match with Devian in the near future. For the time being Devian 'Superman' Golden is the UCW Light Heavyweight Champion.
Golden is scheduled for his first professional Mixed Martial Arts bout on February 11th, 2012 at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. The fight against Andy Hunter was a good test for Golden who will face a bigger opponent in BJ Drew on the February 11th fight card.
The UCW III "Fight of the Night" was awarded to female fighters who faced off in the Flyweight Division. Taylor Angle of Team Fusion faced Jessica 'J-Rock' Rowden of Fight or Die. This was the first time in the cage for both fighters. The action was stopped at two minutes in the first round when Angle finished Rowden with a Jiu-Jitsu technique called a 'Triangle Choke' where the fighter uses their legs to cut off the blood supply to the brain by compressing the arteries in their oponents neck.
Springfield Fight Club fighter Brian 'Alpha Male' Ramirez also finished his opponent with the Triangle choke technique in 38 seconds of the first round. In all there were 15 bouts on the card. This was the third event for the Springfield based UnCivil War MMA promotion.
Event Promoter Eric Stevens says he doesn't like to have more than 12 fights on any one fight card but fighters were crawling out of the woodwork to get on the fight card and he didn't want to turn any of them away.
The next event is scheduled for February 25th at the same venue as the first three events, Springfield's Clarion Hotel and Conference Center. Stevens says fighters should contact him immediately via facebook for a spot on the fight card as it is expected to fill up quickly.
